The History of The Great Wave off Kanagawa
The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published in Edo (modern Tokyo) in the early 1830s. Hokusai was already in his seventies when he designed it.
Because it is a woodblock print rather than a single painting, thousands of impressions were pulled from carved blocks. The series made notable use of Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment that had recently become available in Japan and gave the prints their vivid, lasting blues.
When Japanese prints reached Europe in the second half of the 19th century, they influenced artists such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh, a wave of enthusiasm known as Japonisme.
What Does The Great Wave off Kanagawa Mean?
The composition sets the overwhelming power of nature against human vulnerability: the fishermen in their long boats bow beneath the wave as it is about to break.
Mount Fuji, a sacred mountain in Japan, appears small and steady in the background. The contrast between the moving wave and the still mountain is a big part of why the image feels so dramatic.

How to Wear Your The Great Wave off Kanagawa Tee
The blue-and-cream palette pairs naturally with denim, khaki and white sneakers. On a white or natural tee the wave reads like a print hanging in a gallery; on black it feels bolder and more streetwear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Great Wave off Kanagawa really in the public domain?
Yes. The artist died more than 70 years ago, so the original artwork is no longer protected by copyright in the United States or most other countries. That is why we can print it on our tees.
What shirt is the art printed on?
Every design is printed on demand on a soft, 100% combed ring-spun cotton unisex tee using direct-to-garment printing, so the ink becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top like a heavy decal.
How long does shipping take?
Each shirt is printed after you order. Printing usually takes 2–5 business days, and US shipping typically takes another 3–5 business days.
