The History of Water Lilies
Monet bought land next to his house in Giverny, north-west of Paris, and had a water garden dug, complete with a Japanese-style footbridge and imported water lilies.
He began painting the pond in the late 1890s and continued until his death in 1926, working on increasingly large canvases even as cataracts affected his eyesight.
His largest Water Lilies panels were donated to the French state and installed in two oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, which opened to the public in 1927.
What Does Water Lilies Mean?
Monet was less interested in the flowers themselves than in light: how reflections of sky, clouds and willows shifted on the surface of the water at different times of day.
Many paintings in the series have no horizon line, which pulls the viewer right into the surface of the pond and anticipates later abstract painting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Water Lilies really in the public domain?
Yes. The artist died more than 70 years ago, so the original artwork is no longer protected by copyright in the United States or most other countries. That is why we can print it on our tees.
What shirt is the art printed on?
Every design is printed on demand on a soft, 100% combed ring-spun cotton unisex tee using direct-to-garment printing, so the ink becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top like a heavy decal.
How long does shipping take?
Each shirt is printed after you order. Printing usually takes 2–5 business days, and US shipping typically takes another 3–5 business days.
