The History of Vitruvian Man
Leonardo made the drawing around 1490, while he was working in Milan.
It is based on the writings of Vitruvius, a Roman architect of the 1st century BC, who wrote that the proportions of a well-formed human body could fit within a circle and a square.
The original is kept at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Because light damages the paper, it is shown to the public only rarely.
What Does Vitruvian Man Mean?
The drawing combines art, mathematics and anatomy, expressing the Renaissance idea that the human body reflects the order of the universe.
Leonardo's notes above and below the figure are written in his characteristic mirror script and describe the proportions of the body.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vitruvian Man really in the public domain?
Yes. The artist died more than 70 years ago, so the original artwork is no longer protected by copyright in the United States or most other countries. That is why we can print it on our tees.
What shirt is the art printed on?
Every design is printed on demand on a soft, 100% combed ring-spun cotton unisex tee using direct-to-garment printing, so the ink becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top like a heavy decal.
How long does shipping take?
Each shirt is printed after you order. Printing usually takes 2–5 business days, and US shipping typically takes another 3–5 business days.
